While strolling through Carillon Park don't forget to visit the Print Shop.
The Print Shop is unique as it represents a specific time period and printing method, and is working letterpress shop. It is not merely a collection or static display of printing equipment. Materials are printed in the shop that may be purchased in the shop or in the Museum Store. Dedicated to Carillon Historical Park in July of 1988 by local graphic arts and printing industries, the shop represents a period when the printing industry played an important part in the industrial growth of Dayton and the Miami Valley. During the 1930s Dayton was a major printing center, there were 64 printing companies varying in size from McCalls, "largest printing plant under one roof," to small one man job shops. The Print Shop is believed to be the only working 1930s letterpress job shop in a museum or park in the country. You can observe the equipment being operated by retired skilled volunteer craftsmen on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Park's open hours. Demonstration week-end days are also scheduled. Contact our Calendar of Events for our Demonstration schedule, or call the Park office at (937)293-2841, ext. 106. |
