Transportation

See how transportation changed the Dayton area, and how Dayton changed transportation. From the horse-drawn wagons of the pioneer era to the first Chevy S-10 truck off the assembly line in 1988, the Carillon Historical Park celebrates our transportation heritage.

The gleam of brass and richly enameled metal highlight the early 20th century automobiles and motorcycles inside Dayton Sales auto dealership. Imagine your grandfatherâs "flivver" gassing up at the Parkâs 1924 Sun Oil Station. Go back further in time to the era of the canal and covered bridge. All these exhibits and more recall the transportation heritage of southwest Ohio.

1908 Stoddard Dayton

In the early 20th century, a number of automobile manufacturers flourished in Dayton. The Stoddard Dayton, built by the Dayton Motor Car Company, was the cream of the crop. A Stoddard Dayton car won the first race run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and was the pace car for the first Indy 500.

Xenia Cyclecar

This rare cyclecar was built in nearby Xenia, Ohio in 1915. A tandem model, the passenger sits behind the driver. Cyclecars were lightweight and inexpensive but their narrow axles made driving uncomfortable on the mostly unpaved roads of the period.
